The Alliance of American Football League just recently signed over 500 players to team rosters and 2019 season contracts. One of them being former LSU Tiger and NFL journeyman, Zach Mettenberger.
Mettenberger, who just recently signed a 2019 AAF Contract with the Memphis Express, was one of the most highly touted quarterbacks coming out of high school. Mettenberger attended Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia. As a senior, he threw for 2,106 yards along with 19 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He was ranked as the 11th best pro-style quarterback recruit in the 2009 recruiting class by Rivals.com.
Mettenberger only had 3 scholarship offers coming out of high school; Georgia, Boston College, and Florida State. He originally committed to Georgia in February of 2008 where he redshirted the 2009 season but was kicked off the team due to a violation of team rules. After his issues at Georgia, he transferred to Butler Community College where he played and started for one season. In his only season at BCC, he led BCC to the JUCO National Title game and an 11-1 record. He threw for nearly 2,700 yards and 32 touchdowns.
In 2011, Mettenberger transferred to LSU. In his very first season at LSU, he saw limited to no action only throwing 11 passes all season. He sat 3rd on the depth chart that season behind Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. That season LSU went 13-1 and lost in the BCS National Title game to Alabama 42-10.
The following year in 2012, Mettenberger took over as the starting quarterback for the Tigers. He led LSU to a 10-3 record, throwing for over 2,600 yards and 12 touchdowns. The next season in 2013 he was even better, throwing for 3,082 yards, 22 touchdowns and completing 65% of his passes. He is the only LSU quarterback to throw for 2,500 or more yards in back-to-back seasons and was a two-time team captain. He tore his ACL in their final game of the season but went on and graduated from LSU in December of 2013 with a degree in General Studies.
Following his up and down collegiate career, Mettenberger was a 6th round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2014 NFL Draft. Mettenberger spent two seasons with Tennessee before being released in 2016.
In 2016, the Chargers claimed Mettenberger off of waivers where he spent 3 months before the Steelers took a shot at him. He spent the 2016 season with the Steelers before being released in May of 2017.
Finally, after a career of ups and downs, and just simply not finding the right situation for him, Memphis Express Head Coach and former Bears great and NFL Hall of Famer, Mike Singletary is signing Mettenberger to be one of the quarterbacks on the roster. Mettenberger is 1 of 7 quarterbacks listed on the Express roster, including former Arkansas Razorback Austin Allen. Look for there to be a fiery quarterback competition heading into camp.
